How do you select and color only certain areas of a cartoon figure's outline using Adobe illustrator?

I have been placing and live tracing my cartoon sketches in illustrator. It is super easy to color the blank areas using the paint bucket, but I can't figure out how to color the original black sketch with the colors that it touches (like part of the outline the hair color, part of the outline the skin color, part of the outline the shirt color, etc)

Any suggestions? How do you select and color only certain areas of a cartoon figure's outline using Adobe illustrator?
You would have to break up the outline into constituent parts so you have one for hair colour, one for shirt etc. To do that you first expand your live trace, duplicate it on another layer and remove the parts that are not to be coloured, you will then need to join the paths that are left (otherwise it will fill from the two open points), then apply the colour you want and move on to the next section.

  • How to redraw images in Illustrator?

I have some jpeg images which I would like to redraw in Illustrator with a line depth of 0.01. How do I go about this? How to redraw images in Illustrator?
The basics ate to select the pen tool and create the outline of the image. You can select colours with the swatch and apply it within the lines.

Illustrator is very limited as a graphics type program, I'd suggest using adobe photoshop for this type of work. How to redraw images in Illustrator?
When I was first starting out before I knew a whole lot about illustrator and how much you can actually do with it (because believe it or not when people say there isn't much to it, there really is and there are some fun stuff you could really do)

was to scan the picture and then lock that layer down on Illustrator. Then I would create another layer and use the pen tool to go over whatever it is I wanted. Pretty straight forward.
you can draw the jpeg images thru illustrator by usign autotrace.. in coreldraw right click the image and click the trace to bitmap

How do I trace over lines of an image in Adobe Illustrator CS2?

now i guess you can do this i suppose it'll work but I'm not sure because i don't know what the picture looks like...

    1. file : place : select the image you want to edit...

    2. when it opens press : Ctrl + 2 (this will lock the image so it won't move when you're working)

    3. select the pen tool and connect the dots...

    4. when you're done... you can save the picture .jpegHow do I trace over lines of an image in Adobe Illustrator CS2?
go to ';Object'; ';live trace'; ';make'; - it works okay for simple images, but can get messy. otherwise just use the pen tool and go over the lines.

What is the typical hourly pay rates for an independent storybook illustrator?

I'm starting my own illustrating company dealing with story illustrations, tattoo designs and portraits and I'm trying to figure out a fair price to charge my clients. What is the typical hourly pay rates for an independent storybook illustrator?
To charge someting that is fare would mean to charge them what is affordable?

Find a common ground where you and your client can be satisfied. You can start off small and call it a special. Your clients will begin referring people to you. If you over charge no one will be referred to you. Charge based on how long it takes you but if you know you're slow then it wouldn't be fair.

A piece that honestly takes you 8 hours you should charge between $50 - $100.

Theoretically you can always take another 8 hours and do another peice for $50 - $100

So what should you charge $50 or $100?

Use the following to help you decide. The more yes's you answer the close to $100 you should charge. In order to charge more you'd have to be well known, and desired. (High Demand)

Consider your expenses: (These raise your fees)

    1. Are you traveling to work?

    2. Do you have employees to pay?

    3. Do you have other job related expenses?

Consider your credentials: (These raise your worth)

    1. Did you attend and graduate from any art schools (High School Colleges)?

    2. Are you a member of any art affiliation?

    3. Have you been doing this for many years?

    4. Do you have a reputable list of referrals?

    5. Any of your work Published?

Is it easier to find work as a photographer or an illustrator?

I am not trained in either, but am interested in both. I'd like to pursue one or both as hobbies with the potential of turning one into a source of income. I am also interested in schooling for either. Is it easier to find work as a photographer or an illustrator?
I think it's only easier if you're good at it.

I would personally say illustrator, but that's only because in photography I have a shaky hand and click at the wrong time. Some people are good at picking up a pencil and just drawing.

Just find what you're better at of the two, and build up from there.

How do you estimate what the pen tool will do in illustrator?

I know how to use it for the most part, but it's so hard to determine exactly where it will go. Are there any guidelines/general rules of thumb to follow. How do you estimate what the pen tool will do in illustrator?
It kinda depends. If you want just straight lines, then just clicking along without any drag will do. If you want to do curves then click on where you want an anchor point to be, then while holding down your mouse, drag along till you get what you'd like. If you release and you don't like how it turned out, then just keep going along and you can edit the shape once you're all done by selecting it with the white/clear arrow tool

How can i become an illustrator?

I would like to be an illustrator ( for children's books mostly) but i don't know where to start!

I have a degree in fine art, but i was wondering if i would need to study illustration? I have been told by tutors that i have very strong drawing skills and an eye for detail. Is this enough?

My work is mostly free hand but i work on computers too. I can also make animations. How can i become an illustrator?
I saw a culture show and they featured a local illustrator. Apparently watercolors do WONDERS for the storybook effect. Learn to do watercolors with ink outlines, and get a good camera so you can edit your stuff with Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop CS.

Make sure you have a good strong PC, too.

I'm not sure how to get started on the career aspect, but you could speak to a publisher like Ladybird Books and they could hook you up I guess... Yeah. Speak to the publishers.

Oh yeah, like Carolyn said, get yourself a portfolio together. That's essential. How can i become an illustrator?
Get a graphics card if you haven't already got one. Then practice with it loads until you get good with it. Then get into coloring digitally, get Photoshop or Illustrator or GIMP if you don't want to pay.

Then I would suggest uploading all your work onto Deviant Art or another popular Art sharing site. Get yourself noticed, share work with similar artists and friends.

go to your local bookstore and get a copy of the Writers and Artists Yearbook. there's one printed every year. its a database of publishing houses and printers. and details what they are looking for. from children's books, to greetings cards. once you have decided on who you are going to approach. you need to send them some examples.

its also a good idea to ask them what they think of your work, and if they can offer you suggestions. Many publishers will not take you up straight away. or flatly refuse your work. but you just keep trying. I tend to send to 20 at a time.
Just do a good portfolio of illustrations and present it well and either write or phone publishing houses and ask their advice....

  • Is it possible to reduce a multi-color image to just 2 colors in Photoshop or Illustrator CS2?

I have an image that uses over about 20 different colors (there are 2 colors that dominate the image). I want to reduce the image to just those 2 main colors. How can I do that in Photoshop CS2 or Illustrator CS2?Is it possible to reduce a multi-color image to just 2 colors in Photoshop or Illustrator CS2?
In Photoshop, in the menu bar select Image/Adjustments/Posterize and set the number of colors you want to allow. It will reduce the image to the most dominant colors in the image.

In Illustrator, you can use the Live Trace tool. It's a bit more complicated than the Photoshop method but if you want a vector version of your art, it can't be beat. Because of that, there's a detail guide linked below.

Is there a way you can scale an object in illustrator, while retaining the relative thickness of brush strokes?

I need to change the size of an object, but the brush strokes stay the same width (0.5) so I need to scale them all up individually which takes ages. I'd like to be able to scale the picture and the lines change width too, without having to rasterize it. It must stay vector, so rasterizing is not an option. Is there a way you can scale an object in illustrator, while retaining the relative thickness of brush strokes?
Firstly group your object, then go to the scale icon (tool bar) and double click on it. There is an option in the dialogue box to 'scale strokes and effects', select the box. You can also select a line and then, in select menu' select 'same stroke weight'. This will then pick up all the stroked lines of the same weight or width and so then you can input your new preferred stroke width just to those vector lines.

Firstly, Illustrator has a Metallic PMS color swatch set. Look through Illustrator's help file on how to load the Metallic Swatches.

2ndly, google --%26gt; illustrator: gel tutorial

gel is like plastic toothpaste. it has transparent qualities. the gold sheen, on the other hand, would not. The metal would have layering like it takes with the gel. Metal is high contrast without transparency.

If you are having trouble, maybe you have a higher version of the program on one computer, and it won't open on the other? When you are saving, just save down when that option comes up. In illustrator it is toward the end, and there is a pull down menu for CS2 CS1 ill10, etc.

After you put it in illustrator, take the elliptical tool and put it on top of the image in the size and position you want, make sure there is no fill color or stroke color. Then go to object-arrange-bring to front, then with the circle selected, select the picture at the same time (shift-click the picture) and then go to object-clipping mask-make. That should do it. about halfway down left side is the erase button, click and drag should open different options, click the magic eraser tool, then click within the white section you wish to remove,How do I create transparency in an image using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop?
Okay, to add to what has been previously answered, there are a couple of major details I need to point out.

    1. If it's a black-and-white image, you need to check if it's been saved as ';bitmap'; ';grayscale'; or in color (';RGB'; or ';CMYK'; Once you open it in Photoshop, notice the title bar for the image. In parentheses it will say one of those things. In order to use the magic wand it cannot be in ';bitmap.'; You can change this by going to the ';Image'; menu and selecting ';Mode'; and then ';grayscale'; If it's already in ';grayscale'; or one of the color modes you're okay.

[I'll point out here that if you're importing it into another program, just make it ';bitmap,'; save it as a TIFF and you'll be completely fine. It will be transparent automatically once you import it.]

    2. Like they said, select all the background layer and copy/paste, which will create a new layer. You can then delete the background layer in the layers pallette.

    3. The magic wand looks just like that. It's like a stick with little sparklies at the tip. Once you select the magic wand from the toolbox, you'll need to look at the top of the screen, where the tool options are. You should see a checkbox that says ';contiquous.'; You want to have that checked. If you don't you'll end up selecting all the white space, both outside and inside, which may not be what you want. If you're just trying to get the space around it to be transparent, you want to check continquous.

    4. Then click in the white space around the object. If the lines of the object hit the outside edges, you may not get all of it at once. There are two ways you can get around this.

    a. change the canvas size. ';Image'; menu, ';Canvas Size...'; and add just .1 inch on every size. Make sure you select the middle square so it addes that .1 inch all around. Then try the magic wand.

    or

    b. Select all the surrounding white space by holding down the Shift Key during the selection with the magic wand.

    Then delete.

    5. Flatten the image using the layers pallette (the little arrow at the top right of the layers pallette reveals a popup menu)

    6. Save as a gif.
ok you need Photoshop. first you need to duplicate the layer if it is a BG layer, then get the magic wand tool and select the white part then right click and chose similar. then go to the transparency lvl at the layer pallet and lower it. so I think this should help its a little advanced if you haven't used photoshop before if you need more help I can do it for you or make a tutorial for you you pick!
Open the file in photoshop. If your layer is locked, make a copy and delete the locked copy. Select the white space with the wand tool or the lasso tool and hit delete. If you want to keep the picture without a background, try saving it as an eps.file, sometimes pdfs will work as well, but a jpeg will save the pic with the background when you are ready to print.
If the image was created in Illustrator, create your checkerboard pattern larger than the line drawing and send it to the back and position it behind the line drawing. Then make a copy of the line drawing and move it off to the side your workspace. Select the first line drawing along with the checkerboard and from the ';object'; menu, pull down to ';clipping path'; then ';make.'; This will crop the checkerboard background to the shape of the drawing. Then select the second copy of the drawing and place it exactly on top of the first. That's it.

I want to give my artwork the old antique look of old paintings. Therefore, I want to replicate the old cracks that appear in old paintings. How can I do this in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop?

ThanksHow can replicate the cracks in old paintings in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop?
Tim D is right in saying that you can use the Craquelure filter in Photoshop.

I don't like filters personally, because it doesn't leave a lot of room for customization.

Besides filters, there are several options open.

The method I would choose to use is to find a high resolution image of a texture with cracks like those that you are seeking. With the image open in photoshop, I would select all (Ctrl+A), cut (Ctrl+C), and paste it onto the image you want the cracks on. It will paste it onto a new layer. In the layer box, I would set the style of the texture layer to ';Multiply';. It's a very interesting effect and looks most natural to me. After deciding on the opacity of my layer, I would take the eraser brush, 100% softness, maybe 10% opacity, and brush away parts I didn't want. You can also edit the colours of the texture layer with the ';Hue/Saturation'; feature, in Adjustments.

Besides using a texture multiply layer, you can get more in depth, and download custom brushes with the cracks you want. There are tons of them. I get most of my resources from deviantart.

How do I become a professional Graphica Novel artist/illustrator for a career?

I want toknow what kind of schooling and experience I have to have to become a Graphic Novel artist. I would love to make graphic novel series for a living when I finish college. I'm in high school right now, my sophmore year and I want to do this for a living. What steps would I have to take to be able to work at a place like Marvel or DC comics? Please give me the whole description of the steps. Thanx!!How do I become a professional Graphica Novel artist/illustrator for a career?
I think that your asking for more details than you really need. You want to learn:

    anatomy

    perspective drawing

    inking

    comic art

But you will learn all of this under BA degree for illustration

You want to be an illustrator first. From there you may become a cartoonist, graphic novelist, or whatever.

School of Visual Arts in New York City New York offer a major in illustration and a major in cartooning but illustration includes courses in cartooning and ink design.

    Check the link:

    http://www.schoolofvisualarts.edu/ug/ind鈥?/a>

and vice versa majors in cartooning include classes in illustration and ink for illustrators.

    check it out here:

    http://www.schoolofvisualarts.edu/ug/ind鈥?/a>How do I become a professional Graphica Novel artist/illustrator for a career?
There aren't any specific steps in my opinion. As you start college, you'll also start networking with other students and teachers. Through school contacts, you'll find internships and begin to move into the job market which is what college prepares you for.

I suggest a graphic design/visual arts program. Read carefully what the description of the programs are and for what fields they're best studied for. If in doubt, ask questions of the colleges you're interested.

I also suggest contacting Marvel or DC Comics to ask what it is that they look for in a prospective illustrator. Going right to the source will be a good start in preparing yourself for your career.

Also, if you haven't done so, start putting together a portfolio of your work if you've begun to do so in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. This will be a good thing to send with your college applications and many art programs may require (or suggest) that you have one to help gauge your promise and dedication to the program.

Good luck! And remember to enjoy the road to your dream as much as the dream itself!
Build up one hell of a portfolio--and start as soon as possible. Draw like your life depends on it. Hopefully, by the time you're a Senior, you have a great portfolio and can get into an art school on a scholarship, where you will continue to work your a s s off, study anatomy, etc. But keep in mind that there are thousands of people like you with the same ambition. And then you get your degree, develop a kick-a s s portfolio, and maybe you'll eventually get noticed.

Or you could just be talented like a bastard--I think Frank Cho http://www.libertymeadows.com/ got his degree in nursing and never went to art school or anything of the sort.

What classes should someone who wants to be an illustrator take in college?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm guessing art classes, but what else? My dream is to be an illustrator. Thanks! What classes should someone who wants to be an illustrator take in college?
Look for an art or design department that specifically has an illustration major. The fine arts faculty are sometimes dismissive of illustration; the design faculty are not focused upon it as the primary problem-solving skill. You need to work with illustration faculty.

Beyond that, courses in business and marketing can't hurt. Public speaking can't hurt because you need persuasive skill to promote yourself and your work. Then a range of liberal studies is good too because that assists in providing ideas for development of your illustrations.

In short, find a university with a good illustration program, and take advantage of the breadth of university courses while you refine your visual skills.

Check out this website; it has good information for students.

  • How can I get pictures to stay embedded in Illustrator documents without just being ';linked';?

Sometimes when I open a file again, it sais ';could not find linked image'; and when the file opens, all the images I used (like jpgs, pngs, etc) are missing. I find it happens when I used an image that was on the desktop, and if I move that file, the error happens. Is there a way to embed the file, and not simply link it??

This is driving me nutz!! Thank you!How can I get pictures to stay embedded in Illustrator documents without just being ';linked';?
Yes, you can. Open the links palette (WINDOW--%26gt;LINKS), which will show a list of linked files. Next, select the file(s) you wish to embed, and click the small fly-out menu button (top right corner of the links palette). Choose ';embed';, re-save and you're done.

Just do not act surprised if the Illustrator file size goes through the roof (depending on the size of the images you embed, obviously). :-)

A major disadvantage of embedding images is losing the ability to make changes in an image editor (Photoshop) and automatically have those images updated in Illustrator.

Another option would be to create a specific folder for each Illustrator project, and make certain the images/resources are copied to that folder before you place those into you Illustrator file. This is how most design professionals tend to work. If you need to archive your work, you merely move that project folder and/or compress it.

How do you save your final logo in Adobe Illustrator as a vector?

I use to know how but my days at school have long gone. How do you save your final logo in Adobe Illustrator as a vector?
just hit save. it must be an illustrator or eps file. If you export it as a jpg or any other ';image'; file, it will lose the ability to be resized without losing quality.

How do you find specific colors in Adobe Illustrator?

If someone gives you a specific number of a color you need to use, how do you easily find it? Also, what are the best swatches to use for logos and other printing? How do you find specific colors in Adobe Illustrator?
If someone has given you a Pantone reference you can find that in the swatch library under books 鈥撀爄f the number has a U after it you need the uncoated pantone swatches (C = coated). An RGB or CMYK reference can be mixed by yourself using the colour slider palettes, you can then save that to the swatch list by dragging the square of colour from the slider palette to the swatch list or by creating a new swatch in the swatch palette.

For a logo you will need, ideally, a cmyk version for colour print work, a black and white version for use on fax sheets or embossing, and rgb version to use on the internet and a spot colour version (normally Pantone) for use in specialised printing.

To get your Illustrator image into Photoshop, just go to File%26gt;Place and put it on a layer by itself for greatest clarity and flexibility. You will need to render the layer (rasterize) in order to work with the blending options. Have your photographic texture on the layer directly beneath.

I think they are pretty strict about the credentials required for giving an educational discount. I was looking at getting a copy of Acrobat and they almost wanted me to sign away my firstborn child. As a writer, you don't have to worry about getting illustrations for your book, the publishing companies usually work with illustrators and will chose one that will be able to illustrate your story effectively..

Children's Book Council is at www.cbcbooks.org--they have a row of tabs on the lower left hand side of the page with authors and illustrators directory.

Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is at www.scbwi.org

You should go to a bookstore like Barnes and noble and find books that are similar to yours--age group written for, style and then look who published it. Once you've found some potentials, Then you can go to their Internet sites and see if they accept unsolicited stories without an agent. If they don't you might consider looking for other publishers or geting an agent. You might also try getting some books on writing for Children from a bookstore like the aforementioned and it will have a bunch of listings for publishers and just a lot of useful information for aspiring writers. Good Luck!!What are the websites that i can find an illustrator? Iam interested of writing Children's books?
You stand a better chance of being published if you submit your manuscript without illustrations. Your best bet is to go to a children's writers' and illustrators' conference, where you can make an appointment with an agent and pitch in person.
I don't know any websites, but I believe that in publishing, your illustrator is chosen for you. When you send your manuscript, if the publisher accepts it, they will handle the charges to hire the illustrator they think best fits your book. Usually, you will not meet your illustrator.

    I hope I informed you!
I'm a writer myself, fiction novel specifically, but I've done all my own illustrations. I've never illustrated for anyone else but I'd be happy to help out if I can. I would imagine they're pricey. Google for illustrators and you should come up with something. Otherwise let me know and I'll e-mail you some drawings if you want to give me a subject.

    Good luck.

Artist Market 2008 has some listings for childrens book art, http://www.artists-market.com/

Your bookstore would have this, or your library may have a back issue of 2007 or 2006 in their reference section. How do you go about becoming a Childrens book illustrator ?
There is a common misconception that it is easier to get a children's book published than getting another genre of literature published. This is simply not true at all. The reality is that children's publishing is just as competitive as other genres, if not more. Though you may be writing or creating art for children, approach it like an adult and do your homework. Visit the collection at your local library. Browse your favorite bookstore's children's section. Take notes of books you admire and publishers you admire. Review and edit your manuscript/portfolio carefully, make sure every single word, image, or idea is precise. Have others look over your work; children often make the best reviewers as they tend to be more honest and open. Talk with your local librarians or teachers. Visit publishers' websites prior to submitting to see if they have any further details about submitting work. Make sure to follow the publishers' submission guidelines meticulously. If you do not follow the guidelines, your work will not be reviewed.
    my pleasure

    it would be fun!!!
Put together a portfolio of your work and contact publishers. Digital photographs/ scans that you can email would be a good idea. Children's comics may be worth a look if you're good at black outline work.

I am using ILLustrator CS and the brush tool is locked? Where is the option to unlock it?

Hi, I am using illustrator CS. I placed an Image to trace it. I finished the image. Deleted the layer with the photograph but now the brush is not working. The pencil is fine but the brush has this circle synbol as if saying that I can't use it.

    Where can i unlock it?

I have switched from outline view to printview and nothing.

Thank you!I am using ILLustrator CS and the brush tool is locked? Where is the option to unlock it?
Hi! There is no way to ';lock'; a tool in Illustrator (or any of the other CS programs that I can recall). More than likely, the LAYER your brush drawing is on is locked.

You can easily determine this by looking at the layer palate. Does the layer with the brush tool art have a ';lock'; symbol to the right of the eye symbol? Most likely it does. Simply by clicking on this lock icon, the layer will be unlocked, and you may continue with your brush tool. The lock symbol may be toggled on and off.

There are other lock options under the OBJECT menu at the top of the page. If you click on OBJECT, and slide down to LOCK, you will see that you have options to lock the selection, all artwork, or other layers. Perhaps you may have chosen one of these options by error. If so, slide down to ';unlock all'; and everything should be back to normal.

If you are working doing artwork with a brush, I am not certain why you are in outline view or print view. You should toggle those off, and only be working in a normal view. As I read the additional information you have added, the circle with a line through it does NOT mean that the brush tool is locked, rather that it is only not available for you to use鈥攆or some other reason. Hmmm, have you checked the layer that you have highlighted? You would have to be on the correct activated layer for the brush to work.

As far as tracing your image, have you tried the very easy to use Live Trace that is located under the OBJECT menu also. There are a lot of selections as to how and in what style Illustrator will automatically trace your image, eliminating any need to use brushes manually.

If you are using a registered version of Illustrator, the HELP menu at the top of the page can answer a lot of these questions for you, and be a source of learning more things.

Hope this helps. Best wishes!I am using ILLustrator CS and the brush tool is locked? Where is the option to unlock it?
The REAL answer is that you don't have any brushes loaded! I had the same problem and it drove me nuts. Brushes only worked in a new document, not in an existing one. When I loaded the default brushes, voila! It worked! Report Abuse

How can I be an illustrator for magazine?

I think I am good at illustration (hand drawing) and curious about being a illustrator for female magazine. How can I start this career? How can I be an illustrator for magazine?
Contact the magazine and ask them for ';submissin guidelines.'; This is the format in which they would like to see artwork submitted. Failing to follow the guidelines, usually, results in your envelope going straight to the trash. The editors and art directors don't have time to wast on people that cannot follow directions.

The magazines will ALWAYS post their address and other contact information, somewhere, inside. In particular, look for the job title like, ';art director,'; ';graphics editor,'; or something like that, and, address it to that person, BY NAME. That way it is sure to make it into the proper hands for consideration.

Remember, some magazines do not accept unsolicited submittals, so, don't be disappointed if they don't return your correspondence.

Research is always the first part of a successful artist's promotional campaign. You will want to target the publisher that are MOST likely to consider your work. You don't want to waste time sending illustrations of horses to a hot rod magazine publisher. Sending pictures of cartoony children playing with puppies would be a wast of effort and postage for publications like National Geographic and Natural History magazines.

I suggest you go out and find a book called ';Artist Market.'; This is published every year, and lists hundreds of magazines and publisher that are known to accept submissions by freelance artists. This is really helpful in narrowing down your search to the ones that are more likely to want to see the type of illustration you like to do.How can I be an illustrator for magazine?
There are a lot of ways (most I don't know a lot about) but ones I would know are:

    1. Submitting your work to magazines that ask for it (preferably art magazines of course).

    2. Anime or Comic conventions

    3. or Schools of Art or schools that teach art as a curriculum.

Good luck on starting your career in art! ^_^

  • Illustrator....???

Im really intrested in entering the graphic design field yet, I have little experience. I've done some Photoshop, and Im not that bad at it but you can tell Im new to it... but the question is should I learn or do I have to learn illustrator to compete in this field?Illustrator....???
When you go into college, you will learn all that in your curriculum. You should know illustrator.....and InDesign...etc. you want to learn as much as you can. BUT keep in mind, knowing software inside and out does not make you a great designer, YOU make you a great designer through your education, and learning proper design techniques and elements...how to incorporate typography, color, photography, illustration, etc. w/ one another.

DESPITE what so many ding-dongs think, we don't push a button and make it happen...you can tell the difference between a good designer and a hack in about 2 seconds! :)Illustrator....???
The first answerer gave you a very good response. I'd like to add a little, since I'm currently in school for graphic design myself.

Yes, you should learn Illustrator. Photoshop is amazing, it is such a complex and deep program the real experts will tell you no-one can learn everything it does (but don't let that hold you back it just means there is so much to explore and try and experiment with.) That said, Illustrator is intended to do things that Photoshop itself cannot do. One of those things is creating an image (whatever it may be) that can be resized without losing quality. It's the difference between a raster program (pixel based) such as Photoshop and a vector program (lines, curves, points, with mathematics determining how these things work, and don't worry, you don't have to understand the math part, it's the computer that does the work) such as Illustrator.

If you've ever played around with an image you copied off the Internet, you know that when you try to take small image and enlarge it in Photoshop, it tends to get fuzzy, pixelated or jagged. That's because all you are doing is making the pixels bigger. You would use Illustrator for something that you want to be able to enlarge. For example, say you were designing a logo for a business that wanted to use that logo on letterhead (stationary), business cards, product boxes, trucks, and billboards, you could design the logo at a size that would look good small (on that letter head and business cards). Then you could take that logo and size it way up, say from 2 x 3 inches to 10 x 15 FEET for a billboard, and it would still look good.

InDesign was mentioned, and you will want to learn that too, its Adobe's major page layout program.

The latest version of the Adobe Creative Suite really does a good job of further integration of all its programs and depending on which version you get, includes other programs too, such as Flash and Dreamweaver for designing for the Web (those are two of the programs Adobe got when it bought Macromedia). As a graphic designer it's a good idea to learn at least some of the basics of web design, it's in very high demand. (I will be learning this stuff hopefully starting this spring.)

Hope that helps, and if you want to talk some more about this, feel free to contact me through my profile.

How can I format my document to print all the way to the edge in illustrator?

I am trying to print a solid block image on an 8.5x11 but it prints a white border around it, how can I format it to print all the way to the edge? How can I format my document to print all the way to the edge in illustrator?
The white border is reflective of the limitations of your printer. There is nothing you can do about it because your printer ';needs'; a blank surface to grip the paper and feed it through.

In the printing industry, they acheive what is called a ';full bleed'; by printing the color slightly large than the final size, and, on lager paper. Then the page is ';cropped'; or trimmed down to the final size, with the color(s) going all the way to the edge.

In your situation, if 8.5 by 11 inch paper is the maximum size the printer can handle, your only choice is to trim the paper to a smaller size that include the entire block of color. How can I format my document to print all the way to the edge in illustrator?
Are you trying to print all the way to the edge of the paper? If so, most printers will not do this unless the are built specifically for that purpose. The Epson R200 for example, will allow you to do this with certain heavy paper types if you set it to do so in the print dialog.

If your printer has the capability of doing this and it is turned on, make sure that the page settings in Illustrator are correct for your file. If you are increasing the size of the artwork to make it fit to the page make sure you have selected Fit to Page or set a custom scale in the print dialog as well.
Printers cannot print all the way to the edge of the paper. Its not Illustrator that is causing the white border, its the printer itself.

For 'full-bleed' jobs (technical print term for graphics that go beyond the cut edge) print houses use a larger sheet of paper (try 11x17) with the graphics 'bleeding' over the intended final dimensions, then they trim the edges off, cropping the paper back down to 8.5x11. If your design does not have to be exactly 8.5x11, you can just slightly shrink your entire layout in Illustrator, then trim off the white edges.

ie. press ';v'; to get the select tool ';a'; to get the direct select tool ';m'; for a square and so on.

it may be well to learn the program as is, click on a button, see what does, view and test all the tool boxes as you go, go through the help, and extras tutorials that come with program, play with objects to your own design, there may be somethings you figure out better methods and techniques, than whats already online or in courses,

the courses would be of an asset professionally for prerequisites and resumes,

online tutorials would be useful for on the the spot updates and how-to's,

How do you find specific colors in Adobe Illustrator?

If someone gives you a specific number of a color you need to use, how do you easily find it? Also, what are the best swatches to use for logos and other printing? How do you find specific colors in Adobe Illustrator?
Open up your color palette from your palette bar and type in the numbers. It may be set up as CMYK, and if you have CMYK numbers just type them in, but if the numbers you have are in RGB or Lab, click the little menu icon in the upper right-hand corner of the palette to choose a different input. It's important to note that if your document (not your color palette window) is set to CMYK and you enter RGB numbers, they will be converted to CMYK values, which may change the color you want. If the color changes too much for your liking, you can put your document in RGB color by going to the file (or maybe edit) menu and choosing the document color mode.

These instructions are for Illustrator CS3, and also CS2 I believe, but I'm not sure about CS or lower.

As the other poster said, try to use Pantone colors, as they have both RGB and CMYK values that are universal.

As for color swatches, you can use the built in color wheel in CS3 (maybe CS2) to help pick colors. I generally find that if I can pick a word that describes all of the colors in a scheme, they will usually go together naturally. For example, earthy, pastel, vibrant, electric, and so on.How do you find specific colors in Adobe Illustrator?
Use Pantone because these are universal. Anywhere you go, you will be able to match colors.

What is the best file format for sharing Illustrator images?

As a novice graphic artist I am trying to gain some basic but important information, one of which is: After creating a project and wanting to send it to a client what is the best file to save it as? I ask this because often the artist is using programs like Illustrator and Photoshop that are not installed on the clients computer. Plus I wouldn't want my file to be edited in any way without my knowledge. What is the best file format for sharing Illustrator images?
Send it .PDF, but proofread very carefully when SaveAs... .pdf because Illustrator invariably misplaces the last word of text in the very center of the screen. It can be under a graphic rectangle. So, save as .pdf, change to line View see if there is a word all by its lonesome.

The last word can change. Say, in one version the bottom paragraph was edited. Good chance that has the missing word. But, on proof 2, the headline got edited. Good chance the last word is in the center. C-r-a-z-y, but I've had embarrasing moments with this.

For other graphic programs, Ill. 7 file format allows the drawing to be imported for other workstations.
