How to make a professional calendar with Adobe Illustrator?

I am looking for a tutorial, or at least some help with figuring dimensions on how to make a calendar with Illustrator. I want it to be very professional looking with a picture on top and the dates below. I would also like for it to have a cover and for it to be actual sized to a normal store bought calendar. I am trying to make them customized for Christmas presents, but am having a heck of a time!

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! How to make a professional calendar with Adobe Illustrator?
Illustrator is a great program. I use it for most of my designing. A calendar can be designed in illustrator and can be done very well.

You will need to create 14 documents. Start by creating a Template with the basic guides.

鈥?Start with an Art board 12'; x 24';

鈥?Create a rectangle 12.125'; x 24.125'; then hit Ctrl+5 to create a bleed guide.

鈥?Enable Smart Guides Ctrl+U %26gt; Enable Rulers Ctrl+R %26gt; Drag guide to fold mark of rectangle guide.

鈥?Create a rectangle 11.875'; x 23.875'; then hit Ctrl+5 to create a safe zone guide.

Pagination is as follows:

Pg 1 %26amp; 28 (Cover - Back)

PG 2 %26amp; 27 (Jan09P - Jan10D)

PG 3 %26amp; 26 (Jan09D - Jan10P)

PG 4 %26amp; 25 (Feb P - Dec D)

PG 5 %26amp; 24 (Feb D - Dec P)

PG 6 %26amp; 23 (Mar P - Nov D)

PG 7 %26amp; 22 (Mar D - Nov P)

PG 8 %26amp; 21 (Apr P - Oct D)

PG 9 %26amp; 20 (Apr D - Oct P)

PG 10%26amp;19 (May P - Sep D)

PG 11%26amp;18 (May D - Sep P)

PG 12%26amp;17 (Jun P - Aug D)

PG 13%26amp;16 (Jun D - Aug P)

I wouldn't use Illustrator to make a calendar. It's just gonna take forever. Try Quark Xpress or other publishing programs. Illustrator is for drawing. No wonder you are having such a hard time.

How do you flatten a single layer in Illustrator?

Hi all,

I have artwork which has multiple layers. Each layer has multiple groups and each group has multiple paths.

For my purpose. Id like to select a layer and flatten it so im only left with a single layer with no sublayers to make up the image.

An example of this is ';Flatten Layers'; but the problem is, this flattens all layers in the document... i dont want that but i want it to apply to a single layer only.

Can you do this? How do you flatten a single layer in Illustrator?
Use Flatten Transparency under the Object menu, you will still have sub-sub-groups with in one sub layer called group, short of rasterising there is no alternative to this. How do you flatten a single layer in Illustrator?
I think ';Tim'; is onto what you seem to be asking.

I think that you want to make all the different objects and paths on a single layer to behave as one object.

This could be as easily as ';Select All'; and ';Group'; everything on that layer.

Hi, I am using illustrator CS. I placed an Image to trace it. I finished the image. Deleted the layer with the photograph but now the brush is not working. The pencil is fine but the brush has this circle synbol as if saying that I can't use it.

    Where can i unlock it?

I have switched from outline view to printview and nothing.

Thank you!I am using ILLustrator CS and the brush tool is locked? Where is the option to unlock it?
check which layer is selected, and if any are locked, then check brush palette options are turned on,

How do I import my sketch from Adobe Illustrator into Adobe InDesign?

I want to create graphs, etc., in Adobe Illustrator, then want to copy and paste them into Adobe InDesign or MS Publisher. I don't want to have to save the image first. However, when I try to simply cut and paste into InDesign or Publisher, the image doesn't turn out (and I just get numbers and text). Any suggestions? Should I be using Corel Draw instead? How do I import my sketch from Adobe Illustrator into Adobe InDesign?
You can not copy/paste from Illustrator and into MS Publisher (a crappy program btw.). This is because the content from Illustrator is not of a type that Publisher can handle. For this you will have to export your illustrator-file as an image. Depending on the content this should probably be as PNG (';Illustrative';) or JPG (';Photographic';) - depending on the content. Make sure you export it in the size you need.

Illustrator and InDesign on the other hand speaks much better with each other as they are both made by Adobe. You CAN copy/paste vector elements from Illustrator to InDesign, but not all types of content can be copied this way (as InDesign doesn't have all the capabilities of Illustrator and vice versa). You should only try it for simple shapes that you require to be editable in InDesign.

To get Illustrator content into InDesign, just save you .ai-file.

Then in your InDesign-document go to File-%26gt;Place... like with any other image.

    PS:

If you are uncertain, you need to read up on - and understand - the difference between raster and vector graphics. How do I import my sketch from Adobe Illustrator into Adobe InDesign?

What is the difference between Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator?

I have used Photoshop and InDesign but I have CS3 now and it has everything. I am trying to figure out how to use all 3 for what they are used best for. What is the difference between Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator?
InDesign is mainly used to organize text/images and design layouts like you see on magazine pages, newsletters, etc.

Illustrator is usually used for ';vector'; graphics where you create shapes or text (usually of solid color or with gradients) that don't lose quality when you enlarge or shrink the image. It is best for making logos or graphics.

Photoshop can also create vector images, but not nearly as well as illustrator. Photoshop is usually used for editing ';pixel'; based images such as a photo or a scanned image, which illustrator cannot do. Unlike vector graphics, enlarging and shrinking a photo will reduce the quality of the photo.

The link below shows a good example of an image created in photoshop and illustrator: http://www.webproworld.com/submit-your-l鈥?/a>What is the difference between Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator?

CS3 is awesome in that you can move between all its programs seemlessly. You can do almost everything in all 3. But overall, Photoshop is a visual editing and alteration tool. Most of the time, it's used to edit/alter photos. Illustrator is used for vector drawing because it doesn't pixelate your vectors like in Photoshop. InDesign is a pagination and ';desktop publishing'; program that allows you to create multiple pages in one document.

How do you make a logo in Illustrator clear?

I am doing a flyer for work in Illustrator and for the life of me I cannot get our logo on the colored background without seeing the white behind the logo. I am sick of using white background just so I don't have to worry about it. Thanks.

Also, how can I resize it when I copy and paste it in without it getting distorted? How do you make a logo in Illustrator clear?
Good answers so far. Another possible solution, easier than recreating the logo would be to mask it.

Use the pen tool to draw an enclosed shape carefully around the edge of the logo. Don't draw it with a fill selected, but don't worry if there's a stroke. In fact that's helpful at this pion. Once you've got it nice and tight around the edges, make sure the logo is ';under'; the enclosure, then, select both the logo and the enclosure and use the command ';Create Mask'; (Command-7 I think, if you're on a Mac, and why aren't you?) This will mask out the white background and you can't even see the lines on the enclosure anymore.

This is a little more complicated if you have any holes in the logo like the letter ';O.'; To fix that you have to make shapes for those little spaces also, then ';Create Compound Path'; with all those little paths selected, before you move on to the ';Create Mask'; step. Or you can just choose to let the ';O'; have a white background. Depends on you and the logo. :)

If it isn't quite right you can still adjust it, either by ';Remove Mask'; and then create the mask again, or by using the arrow cursor which is not filled in to adjust the points without removing the mask. The second way will probably be more effective since you can see the effect of moving a point or adusting a vector immediately.

I'm not on my graphics computer at the moment, so I'm really sorry if I visualized a command or something and it wasn't dead on.

Another thought, which depends on the logo. If it's a straight black-and-white logo, make sure it's saved as such. You can't do this with a jpg, so you'll have to use the TIFF format. That way when you place it in Illustrator, you don't have the background at all. You can change the color of the logo using this method, as long as the logo is only one solid color. How do you make a logo in Illustrator clear?
Regarding your problem with the white background: If you know how to use the pen tool, you can ';trace'; the solid parts of the logo and fill them in with your chosen color. Then, if the logo has more than one piece, group them so that you can move, copy and paste the entire logo as a single unit. In other words, you would be recreating the logo in a vector format, which can be resized to any degree without seeing and jagged edges. There will be no ';white'; background, since the solid pieces of the logo will act like they ';float'; above whatever background you place it in.

The distortion issue is an easy fix. In almost every application, when you resize an image, (or a group, as in the example in the first paragraph), you usually click and drag from the corner. If you first hold down the shift key, and then click and drag the corner, the image will resize horizontally and vertically at the same time. The proportions will remain the same. When you have the right size, release the mouse and let go of the shift key. This is true for Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Corel, Painter and most any application I can think of.
You need a different file of the logo. Try to get one of the original filetypes it was created in since it sounds like you're being forced to use a compressed jpg or gif that is in raster form (hence the white edges).

Your other option would be to try and recreate the logo in illustrator, then you can resize it without any problems b/c it is all vector.

Basically - raster files cannot get bigger without losing resolution and clarity, while vector files can be resized without loss of resolution.

What is the difference between an adobe illustrator and fireworks?

which is more better when it comes in vector photo editing and enhancing? What is the difference between an adobe illustrator and fireworks?
Illustrator is a dedicated vector drawing program. Fireworks is really intended as a web design prototyping tool. And photo editing is NOT vector based; although you can do vectors in Photoshop, you will eventually have to rasterize them because Photoshop is a raster based image editor. So I think you are doing a bit of apple and orange mixing.

If you want to create vector drawings from your photos, you are not really directly editing the photos in Illustrator. You are using them, one way or another, as a template for creating a vector drawing based on the photo. But all photos are raster/pixel based, not vector.

  • Can you import rasterized images into Adobe Illustrator from PS and save them as vector without hastle?

I want to create an infinitely scalable image but it is incredibly hard for me to create a vector in PS because of the complex tracing involved if I were to build a path.

Thank you in advance gurus! Can you import rasterized images into Adobe Illustrator from PS and save them as vector without hastle?
Yes and no. Illustrator is of course designed as a vector program, so doing vectors is generally easier than building them in Photoshop (where they will ultimately have to be rasterized anyway!) If you bring an image into Illustrator, it is possible to run Live Trace to let the program create the vectors from your image. However, if your image has a wide color range and/or lots of detail, and you are trying to reproduce it as a vector version, you are going to end up with a complicated mess. You could literally end up with thousands of paths and anchor points, and if you want to manipulate them, you can create a real hassle for yourself. If all you want is a vectorized image that you are not going to do anything with other than be able to resize it, you may be okay. But be aware that if you go to print with this, depending on how you want to get it printed, those thousands of paths can create a printing problem. If you willing to do some adjustments in Photoshop first to decrease the colors and increase the contrast, you may have fewer problems using Live Trace. And when you do a Live Trace, use the Live Trace Options panel with Preview checked so you can select different options and see what Live Trace is doing with the image before you accept the trace. Also once traced, to best be able to work with the resulting objects, Expand the image.

You can also bring the image into Illustrator and hand trace everything as you did in Photoshop; time consuming but ultimately gives you more control, and the paths remain paths because you are in Illustrator, you do not have to rasterize them.

Hope this helps! Can you import rasterized images into Adobe Illustrator from PS and save them as vector without hastle?
no, you have to work a bit more ;)

open the image in ps, make the selection of what you want to use as path, than go to the paths window (its where the Layer-window is) click on the arrow and select Create Path or something like that (sorry, i have german photoshop cs1, so i dont know exactly how they're called)

than go to file, export, paths to illustrator
Like Amy said, if it's monochromatic, or has a very simple set of colors, use live trace. If not, get ready to spend some time with the pen tool.

I want to add a ';coupon'; on a Adobe Illustrator flyer. I want to make the little broken lines around it like a place where you can cut around a coupon. In Adobe Illustrator how do you make lines around a picture that look like cut out lines to clip a coupon?
Create a rectangle around the coupon text. At the bottom of the tools palette, select the little square that indicates Stroke (so you get an outline of the rectangle), deselect the fill icon (there's a little box below that with a red line through it, indicating it will disable the fill). Now open your Stroke palette. Make sure all the options are showing. At the bottom part is a section for creating a dashed stroke, you can set the length of the dash and the amount of space between each dash (it's done in pixels). You can also select how thick that dashed line will be by changing the stroke thickness in that same palette. Play around with it until you get something you like. If you're having trouble, make sure that rectangle is selected before you start created your dashed stroke.

How to save high quality image in illustrator?

He's right. You can't get any higher quality than a vector file. Just save it as an .ai file and your friend will be able to import it into photoshop as a smart object and resize it to whatever it needs to be.How to save high quality image in illustrator?

How to smooth corners when going from illustrator to 3d max?

When I import shapes from Illustrator to 3ds max and I modify to bevel or extrude, the edges have to many corners even when I run the smooth modifier. Can anybody tell why is this? How can I fix it?

Thanks! How to smooth corners when going from illustrator to 3d max?
the reason the smooth modifier is acting that way is because its actually simulating if you jumped up the poly count and rounded everything out according to the orientation of the edges, but if you have polys that are very far from each other it will round out too much. what you should do is give you object an edit poly modifier. then go into poly select, select all the polys you want to smooth and scroll down in the edit poly options till you find a button that says ';auto smooth';. you can also tweak the number next to it so that you can different smoothing groups. thats the quick way of doing it. there is a little more if you want to be specific but for just a normal set up that should be fine.

How to create water spray effect using illustrator?

Does someone know how to create a water spray effect using Illustrator. Something like a blast, similar to if you were using a high powered water sprayer. Thanks. How to create water spray effect using illustrator?
You can use transparency effects to get that with a blend. If you want it to blend into your image cleanly, then you'll have to do a gradient blend from lets say white to the background colour. Then select transparency and choose one of the blending options (overlay) and choose an opacity that you like (probably around 40-50%). This should get the effect you're looking for.How to create water spray effect using illustrator?
I am not good at Illustrator but if you have the money, look into Particle Illusion. Its a fantastic program that will achieve that effect. Its 300 something dollars and you can download all the old effects for free once you pay that one time fee for the app. They have 100s of effects. I use it all the time when I use CS3 PS

I want to learn to use adobe illustrator, where do I start?

So I got Adobe Illustrator, and I want to learn to use it. I'm a total Newbie, I've never even touched it before. I have some basic photoshop skills, but thats about it.

So what is the best way to learn to use it? Does anyone know of any good online tutorials, or videos or books I should get? thanks so much!I want to learn to use adobe illustrator, where do I start?
Best advice: Take a class. These are offered at pretty low cost at most community colleges and some adult education programs.

If the instructor is a qualified Adobe certifed trainer, the classroom text will be the ';Classroom in a Book'; series. It is also the book I recommend for self teaching of most Adobe products.

The book takes the user through a series of professionally designed projects, beginning with some simple ones, and progressing through more complex projects designed to introduce the user to more and more of the applications tools and features. The book comes with an included CD that contains the graphics and text needed to complete these projects.

I always recommend the people to each exercise twice. The first time, using the resources on the CD, and a second time using their own graphics and text. That second run through helps the student retain the knowledge gained from the first run through. Plus, by the student having to locate their own photographic and illustrative sources, it has a more realistic, real-life, feel to is.

The problem with online tutorials is that they can only offer some VERY limited information on all of Illustrator's features. It is an EXTREMELY powerful tool, and, if the user is not willing to put in the time and effort to learn it's full potential, it will be a HUGE waste of money. I compare it to someone purchasing a two hundred thousand dollar sports car, only to use it to go fetch groceries.I want to learn to use adobe illustrator, where do I start?
one technique you can practice with is using live trace, import a portrait or flowers, something simple and nothing too detailed, run live trace to convert bitmap image to vector, remove bitmap and edit vector anchors to smooth outlines,

How you use the magic wand in illustrator?

How exactly is it used? And what if i placed an image in illustator and wanted to select part of it, can i use the magic wand or does it select the whole photo? How you use the magic wand in illustrator?
The Magic Wand tool in Illustrator allows you to select all objects in your document that share common attributes. You're probably familiar with the Magic Wand tool in Adobe Photoshop, which allows you to select potions of your image based on color characteristics. But in Illustrator, this tool is much more flexible. You can select objects based not only on fill color, but also stroke color, stroke weight, opacity, even blending mode. And this means that within your complex illustration, you care able to go in and select many sub-objects with a single click, then modify those objects to your heart's content--whether adding or modifying effects, changing stroke characteristics, changing colors or performing any number of other functions.

How to create a clipping mask on a scanned image in Adobe Illustrator?

I have a scanned image that I am trying to utilize in creating a logo. I need to cut the image from its background, and I have read that the best way to do this is with a clipping mask. When I try this utilizing the pen tool, it says that the clipping mask cannot be used because more than one object must be selected??? Help! How to create a clipping mask on a scanned image in Adobe Illustrator?
Just got though designing a Valentine's Day card for my wife.

The ';path'; you make with the pen tool is one object. The drawing behind it is another. After you draw the path, use the select tool to select BOTH the path and the drawing. THEN make the mask.

Remember that even after the mask is made, they are STILL two separate objects. If you intend to move the image around, GROUP the two objects so that they move as one.How to create a clipping mask on a scanned image in Adobe Illustrator?
    clipping mask explained:

    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/illust…

the clipping mask is of using a shape like oval to cover another image and block outer areas without cutting away,

    http://uic.edu/cuppa/udv/ai/ex4.htm

to use outline of shape create new layer with the pen tool outline then convert layer to mask

    ..
Illustrator operates using vector imaging an the ';path'; system. A scanned image is a raster image, so you will need to turn that image into a vector image by tracing it with the pen tool to create paths (or you can use the ';live trace'; option, which is much quicker. The scanned image much be selected, then go to ';Object %26gt; Live Trace';).

If you want to remove the background from the image (so it's transparent) I would use Photoshop - click the background with the magic wand tool and ';delete';. make sure the layer is independant first.
You need your pen outline on top of your scan you should then select both the outline and the scan and make a clipping path. If the path is more complex, for example if there are areas within the basic shape that needs to be removed you will need at make the paths into a compound path before you make the clipping mask.

Logos containing raster images are limited in their use, because as it is enlarged you will lose resolution. For basic offset lithography your image's resolution should be a minimum of 300 dpi at its final intended size and converted to cmyk.

What is some great ways to promote myself as a freelance designer/illustrator?

Websites, or just techniques for getting your name out locally as well. Any input would be appreciated! What is some great ways to promote myself as a freelance designer/illustrator?
You could start by learning correct grammar. The correct expression is, ';what ARE some great ways...'; If you attempt to sell yourself using incorrect grammar or spelling you'll look like an ignoramus. You'll lose credibility and no one will pay any attention to what you have to say. What is some great ways to promote myself as a freelance designer/illustrator?
Ask churches in your area to let you design their weekly program for free. In an unobtrusive place, identify yourself as the church's designer and give your business name and contact information -- other business have to pay for the advertising but you would not. Also offer to do their pageant posters, flyers, and programs. A lot of contributors will submit the text already typed up via email or disk if you request it; (that way they are responsible for grammar and misspellings.)

Acting groups, even Equity players, could use their program, flyers, and posters designed for their plays.

Your neighborhood grade schools could also use your free services in exchange for getting your company info on the handouts.

Your also building up your portfolio to show potential paying clients. They don't need to know that you weren't paid; though it does reflect well on your dedication to your trade that you do professional work for charitable causes.

Caution: if you leave samples of your work that you expect to be paid for, then make sure they are clearly maked ';sample'; or ';draft'; because a friend of a friend had her services rejected by a church asking for samples for a commission. They ';rejected'; her but kept and used her samples for free.
I would say a website is one of the best tools of promoting yourself.

You would be able to put up some of your work on your site and not have to carry around a heavy portfolio. A portfolio can get lost or just end up in a pile of work they'll get to later. Potential clients will be able to view your work when ever or where ever they want. Also, if someone has heard of your work they can view your website and see if they like your work enough to hire you.

I run into the same problems myself, so I suggest that you copy the picture that you want to print, paste it onto the microsoft office word document, and paste it.....

    then print it out.... :-]

I hope that helps you out.
Relatively easy. I'll offer two solutions.

    1. While you drawing is in Illustrator, do a ';save as'; and select ';Adobe PDF'; format. Your library's computor should be able to open it and print.

    If not ...

2 In the file menu, click on ';Export,'; then select another format, such as bmp, jpeg, tif, etc. I can just about guarantee that the library's computer can handle one of these. Just to be safe, save a copy in a few of these formats, just in case the library compter won't take one, but accepts another.

flickr will not read a native Illustrator file. But, it should read one of the formats I mentioned.

Remember to keep the original Illustrator file. The converted copies will not allow any changes in Illustrator.

  • What is the difference between Illustrator and Photoshop?

What is the difference between Illustrator, Photoshop? What can they each do that the other can't?

Also how can i get a cheap deal for them or can i get them for free?

Thank you. What is the difference between Illustrator and Photoshop?
Adobe photoshop lets you draw and edit photos in bmp format, while illustrator is in the vector format. Vector means you can upscale the pic many times and it will not lose quality.

There are no legal ways of getting them free, but there are programs like them. GIMP is a good sub for photoshop and is free. What is the difference between Illustrator and Photoshop?
Illustrator saves descriptions of how to draw the picture, usually. It is reconstructed every time you open it. I frankly do not like Illustrator. I dislike privacy more though. If you don't have the money you can get a similar program, as powerful which you can import files back and forth between it and the presumably legitimate copy of photoshop at:

    http://www.inkscape.org

Photoshop is one powerful bitmap editor. It saves other file formats but that is what it is. In this case also there is a free alternative. I much prefer photoshop because it is easier to take those to commercial printers, however I don't like piracy, prefering open source so the, in this case inferior open source alternative is:

    http://www.gimp.org
Illustrator is vector-based and Photoshop is raster. Basically, raster graphics deal with pixels. You cannot zoom beyond 100% without stretching pixels and losing quality. Vector graphics use mathematical equations and functions to produce the image, so that you can zoom infinitely without losing any quality.

Photoshop is typically used for task like image retouching, design for the web and drawing.

Illustrator is used for logo design (so you can easily stretch it to any size).

You can't get legally get them for free as they are very expensive programs, but if you are in school, you will qualify for the education discount, which is usally about 50% off.
in photoshop you can edit the photos the way as you can.but the quality seems to be not upto the mark you should have to use lightroom or bridge to make it preety good

in case of illustrator it deals with vector images inthe sense though you edit the images the quality remains the same
Illustrator is a Vector image editing suite. Photoshop is for bitmap editing, however it does contain basic vector editing capabilities, enough for web work.
    Illustrator is vector

    Photoshop is raster

What are the skills an illustrator for a children's book should have?

Can anyone tell me what type of skills I should be looking for? What are the skills an illustrator for a children's book should have?
consistency in their drawings. if for a particular book the characters need to of course look the same every time. they need to be able to almost tell the story from the picture, to know whats going on with no words. they have to be able to relay what going on with the plot. humor is always good, especially when it comes to illustrations that will be going in childrens books. What are the skills an illustrator for a children's book should have?

you should like their work and feel that it complements your narrative.

How do i stop the strokes being included when measuring in illustrator?

When I draw a rectangle and check the measurements the strokes are included. I need the measurements to be what the actual rectangle is and not to add the stroke of say 2mm or whatever. How do i stop the strokes being included when measuring in illustrator?
    Greetings,

Contrary to what you may think, a stroke weight or ';measurement'; is not measured in relation to the shape it confines. This means that when you create a rectangle, the dimension of that rectangle is listed in the top portion of the program, right under the menu bar. (to the right hand side) Those values are UNCHANGED even after applying a very heavy stroke. you might want to check this out for yourself as i have just done.

stroke weight is moderated in the stroke palette...here you key in a value of the stroke, such as 1mm and this value is ADDED onto the existing dimensions of the rectangle. However, this does not mean that the dimensions of the rectangle and stroke are calculated together...the stroke is simply omitted when telling you the rectangle dimensions.

I would suggest that you disable the stroke by setting its weight to zero, if it bothers you. But don't worry about the rectangle size itself cause that's always unchanged after you create it.

I have a feeling that you are trying to create a rectangle of a specific size, but the stroke is ';jutting out'; of that size. By default a stroke is set to move outward from the rectangle...what you could do is change it to move inward, and therefore away from the outer edge of the rectangle. to do this, there is an option in the stroke palette, just under the stroke weight field. there are three little thumbnails of what appears to be boxed paths. by default the first thumbnail is selected. if you choose the second however, you will see that the stroke, rather than being placed outside the box, suddenly moves to the ';inside edge.'; That should keep the stroke from bothering your meticulous calculations.

    hope this helped.

extra tip: a single object can have MORE than one stroke! By using this technique you can have one shape with several outlines of different colors and weights. research about ';the appearance palette + strokes'; for more information.

How do I find an illustrator for a childrens' book?

I have written a children's book - it is for a very young age group (6+month old), so the story line will rely on pictures a great deal.

If I supply amateur sketches with a publisher provide an illustrator or should I have the book professionally illustrated before I send it to publishers? How do I find an illustrator for a childrens' book?
You don't. In fact, you have nothing to do with the illustrations whatsoever. If you sell your work to a publisher, they take over. They assign an artist. That artist actually makes more money than the author does. And if there is any adjustment to be made - such as the drawing is too big for the words - it is the author who generally edits the words. I ghostwrite children's books for a well known sports personality and we are blessed to have one of the best children's illustrators in the business. I know what I'm talking about - I do this for a living. The rest of the people who answered just guessed and gave you incorrect information.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but unfortunately the odds are heavily stacked against you. You have chosen the most difficult thing in the publishing business - getting a children's book published. You are very wrong when you say you think ANYONE can do it. You are also wrong about the number of pages (36 or 48 is standard) and you do not rely on the pictures, the story is what sells the book. There are no pictures when the publisher buys the book. Not until he assigns an artist.

Let me describe for you the current nature of the children's book market. I just finished ghostwriting five children's books for a very major sports figure - already sold to a very major NY publisher. The first is due out in Spring. I am currently working on my 7th one for him with others to follow. This information was given to me by a Senior Editor at the publisher I write for (one of the top 2 publishers in the country) ...

This is how the children's market breaks down.

40% of children's books published today are by celebs like Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis etc. Celebs can get anything they want published. Their names sell.

40% are written by existing, established children's authors like Eric Carle.

15-20% are reprints of children's classics like Curious George.

That leaves at best 5% for new authors.

And that percentage is being cut into by adult authors like Carl Hiaasen and Mary Higgins Clark entering the childrens' market recently.

To that, add the fact that most of the large publishing companies are backlogged with children's books they have under contract but havent gotten out yet. It takes about a year for a children's book to make it out. It usually takes an artist about a month a page to illustrate. So most publishers have their production schedules for children's books filled out for the next few years.

As a result, most A list publishers aren't even reading childrens' books right now, which means agents arent either. Agents only read what they can sell.

There is very little room to break into the children's market. Only books that are extremely exceptional and have huge appeal stand a chance. Forget any holiday related books - the selling season is too short to make money.

Take a walk through any major childrens' book department and you will confirm what I am telling you. Getting a childrens' book done is almost impossible - and getting an advance for it is virtually out of the question anymore. Unless you fall into one of those categories above. I am fortunate to have the backing of a very major sports star to get me in the door with kids books. I write adult novels, but believe me I have tried with kids books before and failed for exactly the reasons I list here.

Ghostwriting has gotten me in through the back door, and now I will be able to sell some of the children's books that have my name on them. For now, someone else's name is on the cover. Someone whose name sells books - big time. Don't ask me how you can get a ghostwriting deal for a major sports star ... I really backed into this. It was a gift from Heaven really and it is a blast working with this person too!!! My mantle is now covered with sports memorabilia worth a fortune!! I love presents. It has also led to 3 other ghostwriting jobs.

That is the nature of the beast. You might get a copy of Writers Market and search for some small publishers who are reading childrens' books, but searching through the agents section, you will see that almost NO agents are reading childrens' books. Try for some small publishers that read without going through an agent. Expect a lot of rejection. Develop a really thick skin and learn to advocate for yourself.

There is one shot you have. As you are searching through that book department, look for something that isn't there. Research. Some kind of a topic nobody has written about. It would be something that teaches a lesson to kids in a fictional way, but that hasn't been done before. Believe me - there are topics. I found one recently. I did a teleconference with the publisher I work with and he was thrilled. He wants te book yesterday. No such book exists. If you can find a topic nobody has covered before and write an exceptional book. you have a shot. Jamie Lee Curtis has been very successful with that.

Always remember that before you send anything to anyone, check them out. Preditors and Editors, Absolute Write Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Checks, Writers Weekly.com and Writers Wall are all great sources and totally free - although if they help you, it is nice to contribute a donation. Someone has to pay for running the sites. If you do not see information on the publisher or agent in question, write to Dave K at Preditors and Editors, Victoria Strauss or James Macdonald at Absolute Write or Angela Hoy at Writers Weekly. They are happy to pass along any info they have to help you.

As for self publishing it with someplace like Lulu - it will get you nowhere. Self published books dont make it to bookstores. It is a financial black hole to self publish. I recently read about a woman who refinanced her house and spent over 70 thousand dollars publishing and promoting her children's book. She has recouped less than 10% of her money and is in danger of losing her home.

Childrens' books are impulse buys. What is out on the tables for kids to see is what sells. Kids don't shop at websites for things like books. They have to hold them in their hand and nag Mom to buy it. The only way to achieve that is through a good traditional publisher. Self publishing will do nothing for you but take money.

I have starred a lot of great Q and A regarding writing on my profile. You can access it and print out the pages. Start a notebook you can refer to. There s a lot of good information here and I add more as I see good ones. I am doing it to help others. Feel free to use it. Add me as a fan and get the regular updates. Keep writing. Remember you have to need to grow a hide as thick as a herd of elephants. There will be rejection letters. That is inevitable. But you are only 12. Gone With the Wind was rejected 50 times. Never forget that.

    Just keep writing. Be exceptional!!

Good luck. Pax-CHow do I find an illustrator for a childrens' book?
There is an association of professional book illustrators in most countries, google around and bit and see if you can find any.
My advice is to send it to a publisher or publishers first.

You don't want to possibly spend a fortune on an illustrator only to find that when you submit the story, it gets rejected.

If a publisher decides it is a good book, they will advise you on how to get it illustrated or in fact they may arrange for this themselves.

I assume you want the book to be published on its merits and don't want to pay out to get it published yourself. If so choose your potential publisher(s) carefully and only submit your manuscript to trustworthy ones.

A genuine publisher will not expect you to pay to have your book published if they consider it good enough to sell on its own.

    Try www.btartists.co.uk

    A children's book illustrator's agency.

Definitely worth speaking to them before you go any further...
I would team up with an illustrator to submit a really great package to an agent. Look into local writer's groups, advertise on message boards, and have people submit samples.
you could try my old friend Tim Haws he is a fantastic illustrator and a very nice man. you can contact him at timhaws@tinyworld.co.uk he is based in Brighton. good luck.

What is the difference between a Graphics Designer and and Graphics Illustrator?

What can one do and the other can't? I just know there's two separate programs for them. What is the difference between a Graphics Designer and and Graphics Illustrator?
    *Graphic Illustrator

Conceptualizes, paints and draws images used in a variety of materials and publications. Must be able to convert complex and abstract ideas into compelling visuals. Specialized illustrators may possess expertise in areas such as technical, medical, architectural, scientific and cartoon illustrations. In addition to artistic talent, may require knowledge of design programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Painter and Flash.

    *Graphic Designer

Creates high-impact designs intended to engage, attract and sell. Develops or acquires the images used in a variety of creative projects, including advertisements, brochures, catalogs, direct mail, corporate identity, packaging, presentations, websites, promotional displays and signage. Also responsible for the design, layout and formatting of materials. Designs may integrate typographic, photographic, illustrative and other elements. Must have a strong sense of concept development, in addition to communication, research, problem-solving and presentation skills. Design ability and proficiency in software applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and QuarkXPress is required. Web design skills are preferred.

Some people choose to be trained to do both because it gives them more flexibility in there careers. What is the difference between a Graphics Designer and and Graphics Illustrator?
From my understanding Graphic Designers design websites and design the layout of things~ Graphic Illustrators draw the image that the Graphic Designer might make more ';WOW!';.
a graphic designer designs the stuff but a graphic illustrator is the one who draws it

What is the professionally accepted size for a logo in Adobe Illustrator?

This is not going to be used for print, but I need to send the original ai file to someone to show my work. Is there a standard size and format that I need to follow? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks! What is the professionally accepted size for a logo in Adobe Illustrator?
As logos or corporate identities go there are many many standard sizes and file extentions to use. If it is only for a portfolio or samples, I would not go over 400 X 400 pixels. If it is for a customer, and you do not know (though you should) what the logo will be used for; web, clothing, letter head, so on... make it as big as you can, my base size is at 1000 X1000 pixels. Then the art work can always be reduced with out losing detail. just reduce it before sending or printing. And always remember to water mark any designs if they have not been bought. What is the professionally accepted size for a logo in Adobe Illustrator?
Since AI files generally refers to vector artwork, the art can be scaled to any size needed. If you've placed some photos in your art (or other non-vector art), be sure that it's scaled to your printers specs.
Illustrator files are vector files and it can be enlarge to any size, so don't worry about the size...

    Hi,Jess

There are 3 step to repair uninstall adobe illustrator error

My friend had the same problem with you. I am sure your computer has registry problems. It is very easy to repair uninstall adobe illustrator error. you just need 3 steps:

1: Download a registry cleaner and install it.

2: Open the registry cleaner and scan you computer for free.

3: Click fix button and you done.

Download the top uninstall adobe illustrator error repair tool here:http://www.fixerrorquick.com/ttfix-uninstall_adobe_illustrator_error-zz0001
Most computer errors are born in a part of your system which hardly anyone knows or understands - the registry. This is the central database of Windows, which actually stores some of your computer's most important files and settings. Everything from your latest emails to your desktop wallpaper are kept in this database, making it one of the most used parts of the Windows system.Because it's used so much, the registry database is actually prone to becoming corrupt and damaged, which makes Windows struggle to read the files inside it. Unfortunately, 100's of registry files are corrupted every week and Windows has no way to protect against it - it's this problem which causes most of your computer's errors. The problem is that when these files are corrupted, your PC actually takes longer to read them and often can't read them at all. This causes errors on your PC which seem to appear randomly. You can use a Registry cleaner. http://cleanup-comuter-run-perfectly.com

Registry cleaners are tools which have been created to scan through the registry. They work by scanning each file and then checking to see if it's corrupt or causing problems. If they find that it is broken, the registry cleaner will replace or fix the file for you to make your computer speed up and become free of errors. You should have a try! Good Luck!

  • Does anyone know how to delete a drop shadow from an Illustrator/vector file?

I made an image in Illustrator and added a drop shadow under effects. Now I want to use that image without the drop shadow, and I can't seem to get rid of the shadow. The only way I know how is to draw the image over again. Any tips would be appreciated.Does anyone know how to delete a drop shadow from an Illustrator/vector file?
Sure thing, first select the image with the Selection or Direct Selection Tool.

Now open your Appearance Palette (Window -%26gt; Appearance or Shift+F6).

You will see all of the objects attributes including fill, stroke, etc. You should see the drop shadow listed here.

Single-click the drop shadow in the Appearance palette, and click the trash can icon (Delete Selected Item) on the bottom of the palette. The drop shadow should disappear.

*Note* As you've specified, this is the way to delete a drop shadow when used from the Effects menu. If you had added the drop shadow via the Filter menu (Filter -%26gt; Stylize -%26gt; Drop Shadow), then you would go into the layers palette to delete it.

How to line up documents for printing front and back in Illustrator?

I am printing a set of cards, and they have a design on the front and back. I need to know how to set it up ao that I do not go over the edge on either side. I am using adobe illustrator, but I can print them in jpeg or pdf format if needs be, they are not so big that they would lose quality, but obviously I would rather keep the illustrator files! How to line up documents for printing front and back in Illustrator?
Your best bet would be to place them in a layout program such as InDesign.

However, you need to provide more information, such as the actual dimensions, how you are going to print them, and so on. If you are printing from a home printer, you will want to run a test print to see how your printer handles double-sided printing. If you are having these printed through a professional print shop (I'm not talking about Kinkos, or an office supply store, but rather a place that just does printing, maybe uses both digital and offset printing) you could talk to them to find out how to do the best layout. Do you have a background design that needs to go to the edge? Then you will need to setup a bleed. That's just one of the many things to consider.

As for file types, your best bet is a PDF file. When I print at home or take the file to Kinkos or Staples, I save the file as a ';High Quality Print'; setting and turn off the retain Illustrator editing (which means the file can be opened in Illustrator, but not edited). Be careful if you have any transparency or transparent objects (gradients and drop shadows can both qualify for this). You can get unexpected results, such as odd white boxes around objects. Check the Illustrator Help files for info on handling transparency issues.

Anyway, if you want to talk some more about this, please e-mail me through my profile and I will try to help.

How much should an emerging illustrator charge?

I have a chronic habit of undercharging my customers because I'm still a student, so I would like advice from professionals please. I've been offered a job illustrating a book. The images are to be black and white (pen and ink) and about 5';x4';, with about 60-70 drawings.

They'd like to know how much I'll be charging. I have no idea! Is $10 per drawing too much, too little? What's a fair price that is reasonable for them but doesn't rip me off either? How much should an emerging illustrator charge?
    http://www.amazon.com/Graphic-Artists-Gu鈥?/a>

^I'm a student too and this book really helps for artists like us as it gives you examples of sample fees and guides to pricing art. This version is current for 2007 and probably good for the next couple of years depending on how the market goes. And research on the internet too for going rates.

Also, as other professional illustrators as to how much they think is enough (like teachers and friends) to get a general idea. And, it would also depend on how detailed you get, what materials you're using, who the publisher is, how tight is your deadline, etc. I think 10$ a drawing is way to little because you're doing a lot of them. I would charge an hourly rate on top of cost of materials (and don't sell yourself too short) and be very punctual and professional about it (but that's just me, do more research on your own too).

And if it's too much trouble in the future (and when you're out of school), I'd hire an agent. http://www.shannonassociates.com/index.c鈥?/a> This is one a number of the teachers at my school use.How much should an emerging illustrator charge?

As an illustrator you can make anywhere from 500. a yr to 100,000. depending on how much you draw, who you draw for, what you draw for. If you get payed hourly, salery,or by comission.

Yes. Do you have photoshop? Just move the illustrator image to photoshop and use the slice tool on the sides where the body of your site is going to be. Save for web, then right click the file to open with dreamweaver. There is a really great tutorial on youtube that helped me a lot, here is the link.

There is a slice tool in Illustrator that is much, much better than the slicing available in Photoshop. There is also ';Save for Web'; functionality in Illustrator. I am a web designer and I create all my designs in Illustrator and slice all the graphics out of Illustrator too. Report Abuse

How do I know if an image I created in illustrator i vector or raster?

I need a strictly vector picture for a project. How can I ensure that everything in the image is vector? Does using any filters make it raster? How do I know if an image I created in illustrator i vector or raster?
Some of your filters may be raster effects on a vector image; you do have to be careful with them because you can sometimes get some odd problems when you print (even a pure vector image is actually rasterized for printing: professional digital printers use what is called a RIP: Raster Image Processor). So I would avoid using much in the way of filters, especially any of the Photoshop type filters.

But other than that, anything you do in Illustrator is by default a vector, since Illustrator is a vector drawing program. How do I know if an image I created in illustrator i vector or raster?
vector is lines using math, raster is pixels like a photograph. It very easy to tell the difference, if you select all when everything is unlocked anything that is vector will highlight blue usually. if its rasterized then it will only highlight the box around it.
Anything you create in Illustrator is vector unless you convert it to raster or save it in a raster format. Some filters will change it to raster, but they will warn you before hand.

How do I make a word created in Adobe illustrator look like its embossed?

I am just getting into Illustrator and am trying to create a logo using a word. I have outlined the text so its got its handles to change the shapes around. How do I make a word created in Adobe illustrator look like its embossed?
It's simple! You can do this easily:

Activate your box, go to the top menu鈥?Effects, slide down to 3D under Illustrator Effects, and a slide out box will appear that says Extrude and Bevel.

There are all kinds of other effects for you to experiment within this same menu, as well as trying things under the filter menu. The fun in being a graphic designer is being able to experiment with various things to see what we can create.

So try new things, and if you do not like it, just remember to press ';command z'; (Macintosh) (control z Windows) to return to the state just before making that change.

:)How much is the going rate for a product illustrator?
Depending on your skill, region and the industry - you could get between $50 - $100/hr.

If it's an upstart company, the pricing will likely be less. My advice - get at least half of the cost up front before you start. Upstarts are notorious for not paying.

    ciao good morning,

    http://www.trasalimenti.blogspot.com/

How long does it take to become a realistic illustrator?

I took a drawing class a while ago. After several weeks of study and practice the teacher complimented my portfolio and told me , as a compliment, that I could create realistic drawings after seven further years of study.

This is a question to any artists out there capable of creating realistic sketches: How long did it take you to become proficient at drawing? Obviously there are different levels of skill and you can always improve but I'm just curious if my teacher's estimation is more or less standard. How long does it take to become a realistic illustrator?
You learned to draw when you mastered hand writing. Now you are just honing the skills of seeing and drawing what you see. Understanding negative and positive spaces and how to break it down. If you took a sketch pad and for 14 minutes a day just did a quick sketch of what was around you, like your hand or a clock, or the dog, in 6 months your drawing skills would amaze you. I would not show this notebook to anyone. Just time you self and after 14 minutes stop. I know artists that do this their entire lives. You can then go draw something else but consider this quick sketch like drawing calisthenics.

Go to www.newcenturytv.com and click on artist. I recommend viewing these on line art lessons. Just like any other subject art has rules and most art lessons in school are about assignments not art lessons. No I don't think it will take you 7 years. You have gotten some great advice here today from everyone. I would say if you have the desire this is something that can be mastered. How long does it take to become a realistic illustrator?
The funny thing is that between lessons- you season the existing knowledge. I stop drawing and six months later - it seems like I increased my skill level -I thnk you learn by observing like you do by practicing.

Athletes do this - they see themselves winning - and it increases their performance. So I question the seven year rule.

It is at the pace you can absorb and process.

Just break down the constituent parts, shaping, color theory, painting, form and focus on mastering each skill -the culmination will give you the skills you need - this should not take 7 years if you do it full time - more like 3.

do this, get an ebony pencil and a kneaded gum eraser, then fold a strip of paper and see how close yo can get the shading to be real. Include the shadows and the reflections.

With in 3 trys you'll get a pretty realistic look. Now just practice with color.

you can get realistic objects in a few weeks.

The learning curve is controlling the tools, just do simple subjects then tackle the big ones, you'll get this within 6 months.

Is your teacher at ITT school for taking your money?

Good luck, you can do it!
seven years! You have got to be joking! It won't take that long. If your willing to work at it and already have some natural talent there with you (Which I think is the case because of your teachers compliment) then it really depends on you and how hard you will work at it. Maybe 3 months. Maybe a year. If your really serious about drawing and sketching than I suggest you check out this website:

    http://www.alienthink.com

It has what you need to speed up the learning process. So once you get done there you should be very proficient. Wish you well!
