I tried Wikipedia, but it just describes Illustrator as ';vector-based drawing program'; and photoshop as ';graphics editing program'; but doesn't really give a lot of detail of what you can actually do with each. So, what is each best for? Which is better for creating content for web pages? What's the difference between Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator?
Photoshop is for editing and retouching photos and color correcting things. You can also create graphics in Photoshop but it's not as fluid and is harder to do. Airbrushing and painting works well in Photoshop too. Illustrator is best for making buttons, icons and layouts since it's used for Illustration purposes and it's easier to work with text. They also have preset template sizes for web layout. It's also easy to import Illustrator files into Flash and Dreamweaver. Both Photoshop and Illustrator are graphics editor, but they edit different types of graphics.
As you saw on Wikipedia, Photoshop is for editing bitmap images--images drawn with tiny dots, or pixels. This is like exact painting where if you resize the image, the dots get bigger or smaller. If they get bigger, the image looks jagged.
Illustrator is for editing vector based images--images that are drawn with mathematical computations. Vector images scale, meaning because the image is mathematically rendered, you can resize it however you want, and it will scale smoothly with no jagged edges.
But neither Photoshop or Illustrator is used for web design. Some graphics designers use Photoshop to create mockups of a web page, but graphic editors do not create web pages.
For web design, the most popular software is Dreamweaver. But seriously, you can use any text editor too.
