I am looking for a tutorial, or at least some help with figuring dimensions on how to make a calendar with Illustrator. I want it to be very professional looking with a picture on top and the dates below. I would also like for it to have a cover and for it to be actual sized to a normal store bought calendar. I am trying to make them customized for Christmas presents, but am having a heck of a time!

Illustrator is a great program. I use it for most of my designing. A calendar can be designed in illustrator and can be done very well.
You will need to create 14 documents. Start by creating a Template with the basic guides.

I wouldn't use Illustrator to make a calendar. It's just gonna take forever. Try Quark Xpress or other publishing programs. Illustrator is for drawing. No wonder you are having such a hard time.

How do you flatten a single layer in Illustrator?

I have artwork which has multiple layers. Each layer has multiple groups and each group has multiple paths.
For my purpose. Id like to select a layer and flatten it so im only left with a single layer with no sublayers to make up the image.
An example of this is ';Flatten Layers'; but the problem is, this flattens all layers in the document... i dont want that but i want it to apply to a single layer only.

Hi, I am using illustrator CS. I placed an Image to trace it. I finished the image. Deleted the layer with the photograph but now the brush is not working. The pencil is fine but the brush has this circle synbol as if saying that I can't use it.
Where can i unlock it?

How do I import my sketch from Adobe Illustrator into Adobe InDesign?
I want to create graphs, etc., in Adobe Illustrator, then want to copy and paste them into Adobe InDesign or MS Publisher. I don't want to have to save the image first. However, when I try to simply cut and paste into InDesign or Publisher, the image doesn't turn out (and I just get numbers and text). Any suggestions? Illustrator and InDesign on the other hand speaks much better with each other as they are both made by Adobe. You should only try it for simple shapes that you require to be editable in InDesign.
To get Illustrator content into InDesign, just save you .ai-file.

How do you make a logo in Illustrator clear?
I am doing a flyer for work in Illustrator and for the life of me I cannot get our logo on the colored background without seeing the white behind the logo. I am sick of using white background just so I don't have to worry about it. Thanks.

Good answers so far. Another possible solution, easier than recreating the logo would be to mask it.
Use the pen tool to draw an enclosed shape carefully around the edge of the logo. Don't draw it with a fill selected, but don't worry if there's a stroke. In fact that's helpful at this pion. Once you've got it nice and tight around the edges, make sure the logo is ';under'; the enclosure, then, select both the logo and the enclosure and use the command ';Create Mask'; (Command-7 I think, if you're on a Mac, and why aren't you?) This will mask out the white background and you can't even see the lines on the enclosure anymore.
This is a little more complicated if you have any holes in the logo like the letter ';O.'; To fix that you have to make shapes for those little spaces also, then ';Create Compound Path'; with all those little paths selected, before you move on to the ';Create Mask'; step. Or you can just choose to let the ';O'; have a white background. Depends on you and the logo. :)
If it isn't quite right you can still adjust it, either by ';Remove Mask'; and then create the mask again, or by using the arrow cursor which is not filled in to adjust the points without removing the mask. The second way will probably be more effective since you can see the effect of moving a point or adusting a vector immediately.

I want to create an infinitely scalable image but it is incredibly hard for me to create a vector in PS because of the complex tracing involved if I were to build a path.

If you bring an image into Illustrator, it is possible to run Live Trace to let the program create the vectors from your image. However, if your image has a wide color range and/or lots of detail, and you are trying to reproduce it as a vector version, you are going to end up with a complicated mess. You could literally end up with thousands of paths and anchor points, and if you want to manipulate them, you can create a real hassle for yourself. If all you want is a vectorized image that you are not going to do anything with other than be able to resize it, you may be okay. But be aware that if you go to print with this, depending on how you want to get it printed, those thousands of paths can create a printing problem. If you willing to do some adjustments in Photoshop first to decrease the colors and increase the contrast, you may have fewer problems using Live Trace. And when you do a Live Trace, use the Live Trace Options panel with Preview checked so you can select different options and see what Live Trace is doing with the image before you accept the trace. Also once traced, to best be able to work with the resulting objects, Expand the image.
You can also bring the image into Illustrator and hand trace everything as you did in Photoshop; time consuming but ultimately gives you more control, and the paths remain paths because you are in Illustrator, you do not have to rasterize them.

than go to file, export, paths to illustrator

I'm looking for an illustrator in the So Cal area to help me create an idea I have for a comic book. This is an idea that has a lot of marketing potential, but I need a really good artist that is looking to team up with a creative mind to go 50/50 in building an empire.Does anyone know of a good comic illustrator?

However, if you want to go it alone, worst case scenario: ad on craigslist or in a local paper: that's how music bands sometimes approach new member selection, so why not give it a shot? I am doing a flyer for work in Illustrator and for the life of me I cannot get our logo on the colored background without seeing the white behind the logo. I am sick of using white background just so I don't have to worry about it. Thanks.

Good answers so far. Another possible solution, easier than recreating the logo would be to mask it.
Use the pen tool to draw an enclosed shape carefully around the edge of the logo. Don't draw it with a fill selected, but don't worry if there's a stroke. In fact that's helpful at this pion. Once you've got it nice and tight around the edges, make sure the logo is ';under'; the enclosure, then, select both the logo and the enclosure and use the command ';Create Mask'; (Command-7 I think, if you're on a Mac, and why aren't you?) This will mask out the white background and you can't even see the lines on the enclosure anymore.
This is a little more complicated if you have any holes in the logo like the letter ';O.'; To fix that you have to make shapes for those little spaces also, then ';Create Compound Path'; with all those little paths selected, before you move on to the ';Create Mask'; step. Or you can just choose to let the ';O'; have a white background. Depends on you and the logo. :)
If it isn't quite right you can still adjust it, either by ';Remove Mask'; and then create the mask again, or by using the arrow cursor which is not filled in to adjust the points without removing the mask. The second way will probably be more effective since you can see the effect of moving a point or adusting a vector immediately.

If you bring an image into Illustrator, it is possible to run Live Trace to let the program create the vectors from your image. However, if your image has a wide color range and/or lots of detail, and you are trying to reproduce it as a vector version, you are going to end up with a complicated mess. You could literally end up with thousands of paths and anchor points, and if you want to manipulate them, you can create a real hassle for yourself. If all you want is a vectorized image that you are not going to do anything with other than be able to resize it, you may be okay. But be aware that if you go to print with this, depending on how you want to get it printed, those thousands of paths can create a printing problem. If you willing to do some adjustments in Photoshop first to decrease the colors and increase the contrast, you may have fewer problems using Live Trace. And when you do a Live Trace, use the Live Trace Options panel with Preview checked so you can select different options and see what Live Trace is doing with the image before you accept the trace. Also once traced, to best be able to work with the resulting objects, Expand the image.
You can also bring the image into Illustrator and hand trace everything as you did in Photoshop; time consuming but ultimately gives you more control, and the paths remain paths because you are in Illustrator, you do not have to rasterize them.

I'm looking for an illustrator in the So Cal area to help me create an idea I have for a comic book. At the bottom part is a section for creating a dashed stroke, you can set the length of the dash and the amount of space between each dash (it's done in pixels). If you're having trouble, make sure that rectangle is selected before you start created your dashed stroke.

How to smooth corners when going from illustrator to 3d max?
When I import shapes from Illustrator to 3ds max and I modify to bevel or extrude, the edges have to many corners even when I run the smooth modifier. Can anybody tell why is this? How can I fix it?

the reason the smooth modifier is acting that way is because its actually simulating if you jumped up the poly count and rounded everything out according to the orientation of the edges, but if you have polys that are very far from each other it will round out too much. what you should do is give you object an edit poly modifier. then go into poly select, select all the polys you want to smooth and scroll down in the edit poly options till you find a button that says ';auto smooth';. you can also tweak the number next to it so that you can different smoothing groups. thats the quick way of doing it. there is a little more if you want to be specific but for just a normal set up that should be fine.

Best advice: Take a class. These are offered at pretty low cost at most community colleges and some adult education programs.
If the instructor is a qualified Adobe certifed trainer, the classroom text will be the ';Classroom in a Book'; series. It is also the book I recommend for self teaching of most Adobe products.
The book takes the user through a series of professionally designed projects, beginning with some simple ones, and progressing through more complex projects designed to introduce the user to more and more of the applications tools and features. The book comes with an included CD that contains the graphics and text needed to complete these projects.
I always recommend the people to each exercise twice. The first time, using the resources on the CD, and a second time using their own graphics and text. That second run through helps the student retain the knowledge gained from the first run through. Plus, by the student having to locate their own photographic and illustrative sources, it has a more realistic, real-life, feel to is.
The problem with online tutorials is that they can only offer some VERY limited information on all of Illustrator's features. It is an EXTREMELY powerful tool, and, if the user is not willing to put in the time and effort to learn it's full potential, it will be a HUGE waste of money. Best advice: Take a class. These are offered at pretty low cost at most community colleges and some adult education programs.
If the instructor is a qualified Adobe certifed trainer, the classroom text will be the ';Classroom in a Book'; series. It is also the book I recommend for self teaching of most Adobe products.
The book takes the user through a series of professionally designed projects, beginning with some simple ones, and progressing through more complex projects designed to introduce the user to more and more of the applications tools and features. The book comes with an included CD that contains the graphics and text needed to complete these projects.
I always recommend the people to each exercise twice. The first time, using the resources on the CD, and a second time using their own graphics and text. That second run through helps the student retain the knowledge gained from the first run through. Plus, by the student having to locate their own photographic and illustrative sources, it has a more realistic, real-life, feel to is.
The problem with online tutorials is that they can only offer some VERY limited information on all of Illustrator's features. It is an EXTREMELY powerful tool, and, if the user is not willing to put in the time and effort to learn it's full potential, it will be a HUGE waste of money. I compare it to someone purchasing a two hundred thousand dollar sports car, only to use it to go fetch groceries.I want to learn to use adobe illustrator, where do I start?

Acting groups, even Equity players, could use their program, flyers, and posters designed for their plays.
Your neighborhood grade schools could also use your free services in exchange for getting your company info on the handouts.
Your also building up your portfolio to show potential paying clients. They don't need to know that you weren't paid; though it does reflect well on your dedication to your trade that you do professional work for charitable causes.
Caution: if you leave samples of your work that you expect to be paid for, then make sure they are clearly maked ';sample'; or ';draft'; because a friend of a friend had her services rejected by a church asking for samples for a commission. How do I slice an Adobe Illustrator Image to use for the web?
I recently created a webdesign template using Adobe Illustrator, and saved it for the web and devices. Now I want to slice the image so that I can add it to Adobe Dreamweaver for use on the web. Contrary to what you may think, a stroke weight or ';measurement'; is not measured in relation to the shape it confines. This means that when you create a rectangle, the dimension of that rectangle is listed in the top portion of the program, right under the menu bar. (to the right hand side) Those values are UNCHANGED even after applying a very heavy stroke. you might want to check this out for yourself as i have just done.
stroke weight is moderated in the stroke palette...here you key in a value of the stroke, such as 1mm and this value is ADDED onto the existing dimensions of the rectangle. However, this does not mean that the dimensions of the rectangle and stroke are calculated together...the stroke is simply omitted when telling you the rectangle dimensions.
I would suggest that you disable the stroke by setting its weight to zero, if it bothers you. But don't worry about the rectangle size itself cause that's always unchanged after you create it.

40% of children's books published today are by celebs like Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis etc. Celebs can get anything they want published. Their names sell.
40% are written by existing, established children's authors like Eric Carle.
15-20% are reprints of children's classics like Curious George.
That leaves at best 5% for new authors.
And that percentage is being cut into by adult authors like Carl Hiaasen and Mary Higgins Clark entering the childrens' market recently.
To that, add the fact that most of the large publishing companies are backlogged with children's books they have under contract but havent gotten out yet. It takes about a year for a children's book to make it out. It usually takes an artist about a month a page to illustrate. So most publishers have their production schedules for children's books filled out for the next few years.
As a result, most A list publishers aren't even reading childrens' books right now, which means agents arent either. Agents only read what they can sell.
There is very little room to break into the children's market. Only books that are extremely exceptional and have huge appeal stand a chance. Forget any holiday related books - the selling season is too short to make money.
Take a walk through any major childrens' book department and you will confirm what I am telling you. Getting a childrens' book done is almost impossible - and getting an advance for it is virtually out of the question anymore. Unless you fall into one of those categories above. I am fortunate to have the backing of a very major sports star to get me in the door with kids books. I write adult novels, but believe me I have tried with kids books before and failed for exactly the reasons I list here.
Ghostwriting has gotten me in through the back door, and now I will be able to sell some of the children's books that have my name on them. For now, someone else's name is on the cover. She has recouped less than 10% of her money and is in danger of losing her home.
Childrens' books are impulse buys. What is out on the tables for kids to see is what sells. Kids don't shop at websites for things like books. They have to hold them in their hand and nag Mom to buy it. The only way to achieve that is through a good traditional publisher. Self publishing will do nothing for you but take money.

There s a lot of good information here and I add more as I see good ones. I am doing it to help others. Feel free to use it. Add me as a fan and get the regular updates. Keep writing. I assume you want the book to be published on its merits and don't want to pay out to get it published yourself. If so choose your potential publisher(s) carefully and only submit your manuscript to trustworthy ones.
A genuine publisher will not expect you to pay to have your book published if they consider it good enough to sell on its own.

I have drawn a number of strips but I would like a program that allowed me to manipulate the drawings so I could make additional comics easily rather then re-drawing the same characters/settings over and over.

But even if you do work by hand, you can scan your work to a bitmap and work it over with Illustrator; Save your basics, and save yourself a lot of time in the long run.
I would suggest Illustrator as your working program because it gives a broader scope in the long term. What happens if you want to use your same artwork, say on a promo T-shirt or poster? And if you need to send it somewhere in some format you haven't used before? Illustrator can handle a wide variety of situations.
Illustrator also offers good color control.

How do I fill all the inside of an object in illustrator when there are mutipul areas?

I made an image in Illustrator and added a drop shadow under effects. Now I want to use that image without the drop shadow, and I can't seem to get rid of the shadow. Sure thing, first select the image with the Selection or Direct Selection Tool.
Now open your Appearance Palette (Window -%26gt; Appearance or Shift+F6).
You will see all of the objects attributes including fill, stroke, etc. You should see the drop shadow listed here.
Single-click the drop shadow in the Appearance palette, and click the trash can icon (Delete Selected Item) on the bottom of the palette. The drop shadow should disappear.
*Note* As you've specified, this is the way to delete a drop shadow when used from the Effects menu. If you had added the drop shadow via the Filter menu (Filter -%26gt; Stylize -%26gt; Drop Shadow), then you would go into the layers palette to delete it.

But even if you do work by hand, you can scan your work to a bitmap and work it over with Illustrator; Save your basics, and save yourself a lot of time in the long run.
I would suggest Illustrator as your working program because it gives a broader scope in the long term. What happens if you want to use your same artwork, say on a promo T-shirt or poster? And if you need to send it somewhere in some format you haven't used before? Illustrator can handle a wide variety of situations.
Illustrator also offers good color control.

How much should an emerging illustrator charge?
I have a chronic habit of undercharging my customers because I'm still a student, so I would like advice from professionals please. I've been offered a job illustrating a book. The images are to be black and white (pen and ink) and about 5';x4';, with about 60-70 drawings.

I have this project of making illustration for stationery products. Such as folders, pencil case, etc. They just want me to draw the pictures, and hand to them as vector files. Look it over at your local bookstore over a cup of coffee, look locally at what people are willing to pay for comparable work, and the MOST IMPORTANTLY figure out what you need to live on - then come up with your price.

The AIGA (American Institute of Graphic artists) publishes an annual pricing guide. Look it over at your local bookstore over a cup of coffee, look locally at what people are willing to pay for comparable work, and the MOST IMPORTANTLY figure out what you need to live on - then come up with your price.
And never cut your own throat to get a job. Walking away from lousy clients and lousy jobs is a survival skill you won't often find mentioned.What are the realistice job opportunities for an adobe illustrator artist?

How long does it take to become a realistic illustrator?
I took a drawing class a while ago. After several weeks of study and practice the teacher complimented my portfolio and told me , as a compliment, that I could create realistic drawings after seven further years of study.
This is a question to any artists out there capable of creating realistic sketches: How long did it take you to become proficient at drawing? Obviously there are different levels of skill and you can always improve but I'm just curious if my teacher's estimation is more or less standard.How long does it take to become a realistic illustrator?
You learned to draw when you mastered hand writing. Now you are just honing the skills of seeing and drawing what you see. Understanding negative and positive spaces and how to break it down. If you took a sketch pad and for 14 minutes a day just did a quick sketch of what was around you, like your hand or a clock, or the dog, in 6 months your drawing skills would amaze you. I would not show this notebook to anyone. Just time you self and after 14 minutes stop. I know artists that do this their entire lives. You can then go draw something else but consider this quick sketch like drawing calisthenics.

Just like any other subject art has rules and most art lessons in school are about assignments not art lessons. No I don't think it will take you 7 years. The funny thing is that between lessons- you season the existing knowledge. I stop drawing and six months later - it seems like I increased my skill level -I thnk you learn by observing like you do by practicing.
Athletes do this - they see themselves winning - and it increases their performance. So I question the seven year rule.
It is at the pace you can absorb and process.
Just break down the constituent parts, shaping, color theory, painting, form and focus on mastering each skill -the culmination will give you the skills you need - this should not take 7 years if you do it full time - more like 3.
do this, get an ebony pencil and a kneaded gum eraser, then fold a strip of paper and see how close yo can get the shading to be real. Include the shadows and the reflections.
With in 3 trys you'll get a pretty realistic look. Now just practice with color.
you can get realistic objects in a few weeks.
The learning curve is controlling the tools, just do simple subjects then tackle the big ones, you'll get this within 6 months.

seven years! You have got to be joking! It won't take that long. If your willing to work at it and already have some natural talent there with you (Which I think is the case because of your teachers compliment) then it really depends on you and how hard you will work at it. Maybe 3 months. Maybe a year. If your really serious about drawing and sketching than I suggest you check out this website:
